A probe into the alarming incidence of student suicides at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, is underway by the Haryana Human Rights Commission. This investigation throws a spotlight on the institution's duty to ensure students' physical and mental health, alongside academic success.
The report originated after four suicides occurred within a few months, raising concerns over the effectiveness of the existing mental health support and crisis intervention protocols. Earlier, protests erupted following the death of a 19-year-old student, Diksha Dubey, demanding better mental health frameworks.
Chairperson Justice Lalit Batra emphasized the necessity for improved support systems to prevent stress and financial distress among students. Reports have been ordered from the institute and local authorities, while corrective actions are expected ahead of the hearing scheduled for May 19.
