The Maharashtra cabinet has greenlit the Maharashtra State Compressed Biogas Policy, 2026, aiming to address urban waste disposal and generate clean energy. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the policy’s goal to combat waste accumulation and water pollution. A budget of Rs 500 crore is allocated for the fiscal year.
With an ambitious agenda, the policy includes facilitating projects for compressed biogas production. A steering committee, led by the chief secretary, will oversee the implementation, ensuring projects align with public-private partnerships and hybrid annuity models to achieve its objectives.
In tandem with this initiative, the policy places a strong focus on empowering local bodies in waste management. It aims to cut reliance on fossil fuels and promote a circular economy by encouraging biofuel use and enhancing overall environmental quality through systematic waste-to-energy conversion processes.
