The unfolding conflict among Iran, the United States, and Israel is exacerbating what many experts, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), are calling the most severe energy crisis the world has ever seen. Addressing the situation, IEA head Fatih Birol stressed the unprecedented nature of the crisis during an interview with France Inter radio.
In a stark warning, Birol pointed out the compounded effects of the ongoing Middle Eastern turmoil with existing tensions stemming from Russia's war with Ukraine. The confrontation has disrupted maritime traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and liquefied natural gas.
This crisis has resulted in extreme market conditions, surpassing historical precedents from 1973, 1979, and 2022. In response, the IEA has made the extraordinary move of releasing 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves to mitigate soaring prices, highlighting the gravity of this global predicament.
