The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has issued a call for Iran to abandon any intentions of imposing transit fees in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, urging for the waterway to remain open and free of charge.
Underlining the critical nature of such global maritime routes, Kallas emphasized the potential risks associated with introducing a pay-for-passage system. “Any pay-for-passage scheme will set a dangerous precedent for global maritime routes,” she stated in a post on X.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed these sentiments, expressing willingness to aid in restoring trade and energy flow post-ceasefire by sharing satellite data and strengthening EU naval operations in the region.
