Probes Launched into 2025 Blackout in Spain and Portugal
Spain's energy and competition regulator, CNMC, has begun investigations into a major 2025 blackout in Spain and Portugal. Initial findings suggest breaches of power sector rules possibly impacting the power system's operation. The probes could last up to 18 months, allowing for evidence submissions.
Spain's energy and competition watchdog, the CNMC, announced the initiation of formal investigations into the extraordinary blackout that impacted Spain and Portugal in 2025, revealing potential breaches in power sector regulations.
Though the CNMC noted these violations weren't responsible for the blackout, they might have influenced the power system's functioning. In response, recommendations were issued to mitigate voltage fluctuations and strengthen power links with France. The watchdog is examining if breaches relate to the blackout's origin.
Further investigation has revealed a series of destabilizing events culminating in a voltage surge on April 28, 2025. Proceedings may take up to 18 months, during which concerned parties can submit evidence and arguments.
