The Spanish Senate recently released its preliminary findings on the catastrophic blackout that affected large areas of Spain and Portugal in April 2025. The report charges the government, grid operator Red Electrica, and energy watchdog CNMC with failing to prevent the disaster.
According to the Senate's nine-month investigation, this was no unforeseeable accident. Alicia Garcia, a senator from the opposition People's Party, stated that the blackout was due to long-standing weaknesses in the electrical system that were well-known but ignored.
Testimonies from key figures such as Energy Minister Sara Aagesen and Red Electrica chair Beatriz Corredor were heard. While the final report is expected soon, no substantial amendments are anticipated to the current conclusions.
