A blaze erupted at Viva Energy's Geelong refinery in Victoria, raising concerns over petrol production as firefighters battled the flames. Authorities assured that diesel and aviation fuel production remains steady. The incident, which prompted no injuries, underscores Australia’s vulnerability to external fuel sources and supply chain uncertainties exacerbated by global tensions.

Fire erupted around 11 p.m. local time on Wednesday, causing an ongoing battle for control. Energy Minister Chris Bowen highlighted the uncertain impact on petrol output, while emphasizing the need for sound fuel security measures amid disruptions linked to the Middle East conflicts.

To mitigate costs, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced temporary relief measures, including cutting the fuel excise, amid escalating fuel supply concerns prompted by heightened geopolitical risks such as the closing of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.
