Two Philadelphia-area men, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, denied charges on Wednesday over their involvement in an attempted terror plot targeting an anti-Islam protest outside New York City's mayoral residence.
Prosecutors unveiled charges against Balat, 18, and Kayumi, 19, including attempting to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization and using weapons of mass destruction. Their alleged attack was aimed at a March 7 demonstration hosted by activist Jake Lang, a known critic of the city's Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
The defendants reportedly threw jar-sized homemade bombs containing TATP and shrapnel, which failed to detonate, causing no injuries. Federal complaints detail that they were inspired by the Islamic State group. Their next court appearance is scheduled for June 16.
