A damaging fire erupted at the Geelong refinery, one of Australia’s two active oil refineries, threatening the country's petrol production while leaving diesel and jet fuel output mostly intact. Firefighters responded to the blaze at Viva Energy's petrol production unit in Victoria State late Wednesday, with no reported injuries.
The conflagration comes amid ongoing global fuel supply disruptions exacerbated by Middle East tensions, prompting concerns from Energy Minister Chris Bowen about further market impact. While visiting Malaysia for supply talks, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed local fuel security amid growing consumer panic-buying.
Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt stated that while most units remain operational, they've minimized output pending safety assurances. Meanwhile, emergency services manage traffic restrictions and smoke advisories near the site, as Australia grapples with intensified fuel scarcity following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
