Venezuelan oil businessman Wilmer Ruperti has been released from detention by the country's intelligence police, his legal representatives confirmed. A video on social media showed Ruperti at home, following his unexpected release.
Ruperti had been detained since March 19 after being summoned for a meeting, while his security detail was briefly held before being freed. Despite his release, authorities have not provided any explanation or charges related to his detention, leaving his legal team questioning the reasons behind the situation.
Maroil Trading, Ruperti’s company, had a lucrative contract exporting Venezuelan petroleum coke with the state-owned energy firm PDVSA. However, the partnership became fraught with conflict over payment discrepancies, leading to PDVSA suspending deliveries amid a debt audit in 2023.
