Navigating Energy Challenges: India's Role in Regional Fuel Supply Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

Amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the Maldives has approached India for fuel supplies, according to a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry. Currently, India is supplying fuel to Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka under commercial agreements, said Randhir Jaiswal in a news conference on Thursday.

Jaiswal indicated that the Maldives has requested petroleum supplies on both short-term and long-term bases. India is assessing this request in light of its own fuel availability and needs. Traditionally, the Maldives sources its fuel from Oman, but oil shipments have been disrupted by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, affecting the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

India is also in talks with Mauritius and Seychelles regarding the current energy situation, although no requests have been made by them yet. As sanctions ease, refiners in India are preparing to reimport oil from Iran. Meanwhile, as logistical challenges persist, India continues to navigate these complex waters by securing safe passage for its tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
