India's Sunflower Oil Demand Set to Dip Amid Global Disruptions

Demand for refined sunflower oil in India is projected to drop by about 10% this fiscal year, due to supply chain disruptions and rising prices. Despite decreasing volumes, revenue is expected to remain steady as higher prices mitigate the impact. Geopolitical tensions further complicate the situation, affecting imports and costs.

In an insightful analysis, Crisil Ratings highlights a looming 10% decline in demand for refined sunflower oil in India for the current fiscal year. The report attributes this drop to significant supply chain disruptions stemming from geopolitical tensions and escalating prices, posing challenges to the industry.

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted shipping routes, leading to longer transit times and inflated logistics costs. Consequently, higher retail prices for sunflower oil have prompted consumers to opt for more economical alternatives like rice bran and soybean oils, which are significantly cheaper.

Despite the anticipated decline in volumes, Crisil notes that revenue for refiners may remain flat due to the possibility of offsetting higher prices. The Indian sunflower oil industry, heavily reliant on imports primarily from Ukraine and Russia, faces added pressure from increased shipping costs and war-risk insurance premiums, further driving up expenses.

The landscape is fraught with complexities, as tight supplies and declining inventory levels could pose a short-term concern for domestic refiners. However, these conditions may temporarily free up working capital and bolster cash flows.

Despite present hurdles, the industry's robust financial standing is expected to support stability. An analysis of major players reveals that solid balance sheets should help mitigate the adverse effects of current challenges, maintaining a stable credit profile amidst turbulent times.
