Tighter US Visa Scrutiny Impacts Indian Student Enrolments
Indian student enrolments in U.S. educational programs have decreased by 6.9% from February 2025 to February 2026, partly due to increased scrutiny of visa applications. The U.S. Department of State implements comprehensive vetting, impacting F-1 visa issuances, which saw a significant decline during June-July 2025.

The number of Indian students enrolled in American educational programs has fallen by 6.9% between February 2025 and February 2026, according to data presented to the Indian Parliament. The decline is attributed to the stiffening of visa application processes, which have become more rigorous.
The U.S. Department of State's steps to enforce expanded vetting for visa applicants, including comprehensive checks on social media presence and additional eligibility requirements, have contributed to tighter admissions. These measures have had a marked effect on the issuance of student visas, particularly F-1 visas.
In June 2025, the U.S. Embassy highlighted that granting a visa does not ensure a student's continuous stay in the country, as visa monitoring persists post-approval. These stringent measures, coupled with regular discussions by Indian authorities with their U.S. counterparts, underscore the ongoing challenges facing Indian students in the U.S.
