From January 8, 2026, the Australian government has heightened the scrutiny on Indian student visa applicants, classifying them under the 'highest-risk' category. This reversion to the pre-September 2025 framework signifies a transition to more stringent documentation requirements, the Centre informed Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed awareness of this change, with Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh outlining the revised evidence requirements from level 2 to level 3 for Indian students under Australia's Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF). The shift demands a thorough vetting process and additional paperwork.
Despite the tightened measures, India maintains a constructive dialogue with Australia to foster educational collaboration, including opening Australian university campuses in India. The government is committed to supporting Indian students seeking higher education and research opportunities in Australia.
