BJP MP Champions Inclusive Debate on Constitutional Reform for Simultaneous Elections

In a significant move toward electoral reform, BJP MP PP Chaudhary underscored the necessity of consulting a wide range of opinions on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024. The bill, which proposes the alignment of Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, has prompted input from Vice-Chancellors of national universities to ensure comprehensiveness.

Chairing the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), Chaudhary highlighted ongoing discussions about the bill's legal nuances. His approach stresses that legislation should withstand the test of time, securing relevance for future decades. He emphasized India's standing as a mature democracy, suggesting that successful implementation could serve as a model for other democratic nations.

The proposed legislation, tabled in the Lok Sabha on December 17, 2024, aims to integrate the electoral processes of the Lok Sabha and state assemblies under the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative. Accompanying this is the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, both integral to establishing simultaneous elections nationwide. The JPC's review will ensure these amendments meet legal and democratic standards.
