Parliamentary Committee Criticizes Delays in Coal Gasification Expenditure

A parliamentary committee has criticized the significant delays in expenditure under the scheme intended to boost coal and lignite gasification. The committee noted that despite a revised allocation of Rs 285 crore for the years 2025-26, no spending had occurred.

In a detailed review, the standing committee on coal, mines, and steel observed that the scheme's outlay was reduced from Rs 300 crore in the Budget Estimates 2025-26 to Rs 285 crore at the Revised Estimates stage, due to milestone-based needs.

The committee has recommended a time-bound spending framework with quarterly milestone verification. Additionally, it suggested that the coal ministry promotes the use of indigenous high-ash gasification technology and explore the feasibility of leveraging Indian high-ash, low-grade coal for gasification projects.
