Government's Big Push for Fisheries: 200 Deep-Sea Trawlers in Five Years

In a significant move aimed at uplifting the fishing community, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared on Monday the Central Government's ambitious plan to supply 200 deep-sea trawlers to fishermen operating across India’s extensive coastline over the next five years.

During the inauguration of the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, Shah emphasized that the initiative, undertaken by the Government, cooperatives, and the Fisheries Department, will revolutionize the fishing industry. The trawlers are designed to remain at sea for up to 25 days and carry as much as 20 tonnes of fish per trip.

Shah highlighted that a central vessel would coordinate and facilitate the transport of fish from sea to shore, ensuring efficiency. This initiative marks a substantial milestone for economically disadvantaged fishermen along India's 11,099-kilometre coast, heralding a transformative project for their livelihoods.
