The Bombay High Court has drawn attention to the misuse of artificial intelligence in tax assessments, emphasizing the importance of verification when using AI-generated data. The court nullified an income tax assessment against KMG Wires Pvt Ltd, criticizing the assessing officer for relying on non-existent case laws produced by AI.
Justice B P Colabawalla and Justice Amit Jamsandekar noted that quasi-judicial authorities mustn't blindly trust AI outcomes. The court annulled the assessment order and demand notice issued earlier this year, advocating for a reassessment that adheres to natural justice principles.
The court's decision highlighted that artificial intelligence, despite its growing influence, requires thorough validation to prevent errors. The case serves as a warning for authorities to ensure AI-generated information is cross-verified before influencing decisions.
