Himachal Pradesh Revives Vigilance Committee, Focuses on Social Justice

The meeting focused on enhancing the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Tribes, emphasizing equality and strict enforcement.

In a pivotal meeting after 11 years, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhuvinder Singh Sukhu presided over the State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, focusing on social justice initiatives. This body, formed under the Protection of Civil Rights Act and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, held detailed discussions on enhancing protections for marginalized communities.
The Chief Minister credited the foresight of Congress and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar for these laws, which aim to further social equity. He announced that the Additional Chief Secretary of the Social Justice and Empowerment Department is now the nodal officer tasked with strengthening the administrative mechanisms for law enforcement.
Highlighting efforts inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals, CM Sukhu noted that the state has seen a reduction in untouchability incidents. Over Rs 7.35 crore has been disbursed as rehabilitation assistance, and over 45,000 victims have received free legal aid. The event also discussed the role of reservations and social schemes in promoting equality.
