Himachal Pradesh's Drive for Social Justice and Equality
The Himachal Pradesh government, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's principles, commits to the welfare of the Scheduled Caste community. Led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, they are enforcing laws to prevent atrocities and providing rehabilitation and legal aid. Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi's dedication to social equality, the Himachal Pradesh government is actively working to improve conditions for the Scheduled Caste community. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the commitment during a meeting chaired under the Protection of Civil Rights Act and the SCs and STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
According to Sukhu, effective implementation of these laws has positively impacted society, with a notable reduction in untouchability incidents. An additional chief secretary in the social justice department has been appointed as the nodal officer to enhance administration further. This meeting, the first in 11 years, provided a platform for committee members to discuss significant issues and offer suggestions.
Over the past three years, Rs 7.35 crore has been distributed for rehabilitation, and 45,238 people have received free legal aid. Social Justice Minister Dhani Ram Shandil highlighted that 25.19% of the state's population belongs to the SC community. The government is fostering social harmony and unity through job reservations and various social schemes.
