Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal witnessed widespread rainfall in the past 24 hours, with both northern and southern districts experiencing moderate to heavy showers, as reported by the Meteorological Department. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai noted that Pallipattu in Tiruvallur district received the highest rainfall at 15 cm, followed by Nalumukku and Oothu in Tirunelveli at 12 cm and 11 cm respectively.
Significant rainfall amounts include Arakonam in Ranipet with 10 cm and several locations in Kanyakumari such as Balamore, Pechiparai AWS, and Medavakkam in Chennai each receiving 9 cm. Kakkachi in Tirunelveli reported 8 cm, while other areas like Thiruvalangadu and Tiruttani in Tiruvallur and various locations in Kanyakumari received around 7 cm. Chennai's southern areas saw moderate to heavy spells, with Medavakkam recording 9 cm. Rain caused waterlogging in south Chennai, notably in Velachery and Pallikaranai, disrupting traffic.
Multiple areas in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari received 5 to 7 cm of rain, demonstrating a vigorous northeast monsoon in the south. The IMD credits the current activity to an easterly wave over the southern Bay of Bengal and forecasts continued rainfall in coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal with sporadic heavy spells in the next 24 hours. Interior districts may experience scattered showers, as meteorologists predict the northeast monsoon to sustain over the region.
