China's Communist Party Ramps Up Tech Self-Reliance
China's Communist Party vows to build a modern industrial system and improve technology self-reliance amidst competition with the U.S. During the Party's Central Committee meeting, goals such as expanding domestic demand and bettering livelihoods were prioritized. Analysts, however, expect policy changes to proceed slowly.
In a strategic move against rising competition from the United States, China's Communist Party elite has pledged to construct a modern industrial system focused on technological self-reliance. According to the Party's Central Committee, this endeavor holds the key to enhancing China's global standing amidst the prevailing geopolitical landscape.
Despite being well-known goals, the Party reiterated promises to expand domestic demand and improve citizen welfare—objectives that have taken a back seat in recent years due to an emphasis on manufacturing and investments. China's economy, heavily reliant on exports during heightened U.S. trade tensions, may soon require rebalancing, though analysts foresee a gradual approach.
Following a closed-door, four-day meeting, state news agency Xinhua outlined the Party’s strategic priorities in its forthcoming five-year development plan. Emphasizing manufacturing as the industrial backbone, the communique expressed concern over the balance of opportunities and challenges expected between 2026 and 2030. The absence of specific details regarding policy execution and funding leaves investors and economists skeptical about the feasibility of the proposed economic reforms.
