The death toll from the tragic explosion at a fireworks unit in Thrissur has risen to 14, with officials warning that further fatalities might be confirmed following DNA testing of over 32 body parts uncovered at the scene. The Kerala government has promptly labeled the calamity as a 'state-specific disaster', enabling expedited relief measures.
In response, the government has announced financial assistance of Rs 14 lakh to the dependents of the deceased, and a comprehensive judicial investigation led by former Kerala High Court judge Justice C N Ramachandran Nair is underway. The inquiry aims to evaluate potential safety reforms for fireworks in temple festivals to avert future tragedies.
Simultaneously, the Kerala State Police is conducting a thorough investigation into the explosion's origin, with an SIT formed under the district police's supervision. The tragic event unfolded as fireworks were being prepared for the upcoming Thrissur Pooram festival.
