A couple belonging to the Ho tribe in Jharkhand's Chaibasa district has been ostracized for life for marrying within the same Gotra, a practice considered sinful by the community. This decision followed a gathering on Sunday attended by the gram pradhan, religious figures, and the couple's parents.
Despite initial community outrage over the couple's relationship, the society refrained from unlawful actions. Gabbar Singh Hembram, General Secretary of Adivasi Ho Samaj Yuva Mahasabha, emphasized the shift from violent past practices, aligning current measures with the law.
To resolve the matter, the couple's parents will bear the cost of traditional purification rituals, symbolically purging the alleged sin. Hembram stated that while the couple remains unaccepted, the intent is to discourage such unions through traditional means without violating legal boundaries.
