The Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America (BJANA) hosted a vibrant celebration of Chhath Mahaparv at Papaianni Park in Edison, New Jersey. The event was a confluence of devotion and cultural pride, bringing together the Indian-American community to honor the Sun God (Surya Dev) and Chhathi Maiya.
A significant highlight was the participation of around 40 Vratis (devotees) who observed a sacred fast and performed the Sandhya Arghya (evening offering), as over 700 community members gathered to participate. The air was filled with traditional songs, and the sight of diyas lighting the park, alongside offerings of Thekua and fruit, added to the spiritually enriching atmosphere. Nine Vratis, carrying offering baskets on their heads, symbolically reflected the festival's deep-rooted traditions.
Expressing gratitude, BJANA President Sanjeev Singh hailed the community's energy, thanking volunteers for their efforts in organizing the meaningful event. Vice President Priti Kashyap emphasized the festival's significance in reconnecting to roots, childhood memories, and nature -- with support from Mayor Sam Joshi and Edison Township. Chairman Alok Kumar from Bihar Foundation USA East Coast Chapter also shared heartfelt reflections, drawing parallels with celebrations in Bihar and Jharkhand. The participation of children and youth highlighted the preservation and continuation of cultural traditions. The Chhath Mahaparv celebration exuded the spirit of faith, unity, and nostalgia, bringing the essence of Bihar and Jharkhand to New Jersey once again.
