On Monday, actor-politician Kangana Ranaut appeared in a Bathinda court concerning a defamation case accrued from a contentious tweet she made during the 2020-21 farmer protests. The case cites a misunderstanding involving her tweet about 73-year-old Mahinder Kaur, prompting the court to mandate her personal attendance.
Despite her request to appear via video conference being denied, the BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh made her way to the court amidst heightened security. Ranaut emphasized her respect for all 'mata' and clarified that her comments were not directed at any individual.
The legal matter stems from Ranaut's retweet, which allegedly misidentified Kaur as activist Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame. While discussing the issue with Mahinder Kaur's husband, Ranaut expressed her regret for any misunderstanding caused. The case remains active following judicial rulings against quashing the complaint, although the apex court acknowledged Ranaut's embellishment of the retweet.
