Supreme Court's Verdict on MGNREGA: A Victory for Bengal

The Supreme Court has upheld the Calcutta High Court's decision to implement the MGNREGA scheme prospectively in West Bengal. The ruling, effective from August 1, 2025, marks a significant legal victory for Trinamool Congress against BJP's alleged economic sanctions.

Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress national general secretary, hailed the decision as a blow to the BJP, which he accused of exploiting Bengal. Banerjee highlighted the Supreme Court ruling as a democratic win against perceived coercion by the central government.

The Court refused to entertain the Centre's appeal against the High Court's June 18 order. Justice Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta emphasized monitoring the scheme to prevent irregularities, reinforcing Bengal's stance in its struggle for rightful economic privileges.
