In a pivotal move ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court has sanctioned the sale and use of green firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), under specific conditions regarding timing. This decision comes in response to a joint appeal from the Centre and the Delhi government.
The ruling permits the sale of green crackers from October 18 to 21, with usage confined to designated hours before and during Diwali. Chief Justice B R Gavai emphasized the need for a balanced approach to preserve the environment while allowing cultural festivities. The court's order rebuffs e-commerce sales and mandates strict patrolling to ensure adherence.
Despite previous blanket bans, no significant improvement in air quality was recorded, leading to a reevaluation. Data highlighted no significant pollution reduction, aside from during the COVID-19 lockdown. This verdict aligns with introducing eco-friendly crackers after a 2018 ruling to curtail emission levels.
