An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolted western Turkey on Monday, the Turkish emergency response agency announced. Despite its intensity, no immediate damage was reported.
The quake's epicenter was determined to be in the town of Sindirgi, located in Balikesir province, per the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency's (AFAD) report. Tremors were felt as far as Istanbul, as well as in Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir provinces, according to the Haberturk news channel.
Turkey's geological positioning on major fault lines makes it prone to frequent seismic activity. In a stark reminder of its vulnerability, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2023 resulted in over 53,000 fatalities in Turkey and affected numerous structures across the nation.
