Pharmaceutical Resilience: A Call for Innovation and Independence

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal has issued a strong call to the Indian pharmaceutical industry to reduce its reliance on imported raw materials and to diversify export supply chains, in light of global uncertainties.

In a speech delivered in Hyderabad, Agrawal emphasized the need for India to secure a more substantial market presence by meeting a larger share of domestic pharmaceutical needs through indigenous production. He highlighted the strategic importance of building resilience against geopolitical volatility and critical import dependencies.

Agrawal further pointed out the necessity for India to solidify its role as a global leader in quality and cost-effective pharmaceuticals. He advocated for a shift from a volume-driven to a value-driven industry, focusing on innovation and new patent development to enhance global market competitiveness.
