The Maharashtra State Contractors' Association (MSCA) has issued a stark warning to the BJP-led Mahayuti government: clear unpaid dues or face stalled development projects as of April 7. The urgently penned letter from the MSCA detailed the alarming Rs 96,000 crore owed to contractors across multiple departments.
Despite having cleared Rs 20,000 crore last year after strong protests, the outstanding amount remains high, compounded by new invoices from ongoing and completed projects. Major arrears encompass Rs 29,000 crore for Public Works, Rs 35,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission, among others, underscoring the wide-reaching financial obligations of the state.
The state's cash crunch, fueled by expansive welfare schemes and lower-than-expected revenue collections, places immense pressure on the fiscal landscape. Notably, hefty borrowings have not sufficiently alleviated the financial stress, raising concerns over the future of essential development operations in Maharashtra.
