Indian Railways Breaks Records in Cargo and Passenger Transport

The Railway Ministry announced a landmark achievement in their 2025-26 fiscal report, transporting a record 1,670 million tonnes of cargo alongside 741 crore passengers. This significant milestone marked a growth of over 3% in both cargo and passenger sectors, building on sustained demand for rail services across India.
Revenue for Indian Railways also saw substantial growth, increasing by 5.96% to approximately Rs 80,000 crore, up from Rs 75,500 crore the previous year, largely driven by strong passenger traffic and increased earnings. These figures highlight Railways' expanding role in passenger mobility and improving financial performance.
Growth in cargo transport was complemented by a 4.56% rise in wagons handled, signaling improvements in operational efficiency and capacity. The rail sector, benefiting from key industries such as fertilisers and steel, continued to meet the nation's needs for reliable logistics amid ongoing infrastructure development.
