Researchers are calling for urgent attention to artificial intelligence (AI) ethics, governance, and digital literacy to ensure that technological progress does not undermine trust, fairness, or human oversight.

A new study explores the evolving role of AI in collaborative and participatory environments where users actively contribute, collaborate, and interact. Titled "Artificial Intelligence in Participatory Environments: Technologies, Ethics, and Literacy Aspects," and published in Societies, the research synthesizes insights from nineteen multidisciplinary contributions to reveal how AI is transforming both professional and social ecosystems.

AI adoption accelerates across education, media, and everyday life

Over the past decade, advances in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing have enabled AI systems to perform increasingly complex tasks, from content creation and data analysis to communication and decision support.

Participatory environments are among the most affected. These include higher education, journalism, digital media, tourism, and even creative sectors such as urban art. AI tools are being integrated into these domains to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and enable new forms of interaction.

In the education domain, AI is transforming how students learn and engage with content. Universities are incorporating AI tools into curricula to improve technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Students' willingness to adopt these technologies is closely tied to their perception of how AI will influence their future careers, as well as their level of digital literacy. The study finds that institutions are increasingly focusing on tailored strategies to ensure that AI integration aligns with both academic objectives and professional demands.

In journalism and media, AI adoption is advancing, though still in an early and experimental phase. Journalists are using AI tools primarily to support routine tasks such as transcription, data processing, and content editing. At the same time, media organizations are deploying AI-driven systems to enhance audience engagement through chatbots, recommendation engines, and interactive storytelling formats. These developments are reshaping how news is produced, distributed, and consumed.

AI is also influencing everyday activities. From personalized nutrition and tourism analytics to creative applications such as AI-generated art and simulations, the technology is becoming deeply embedded in daily life. The study underscores that AI is no longer confined to isolated applications but is increasingly shaping how individuals interact, collaborate, and make decisions in complex environments.

Ethical risks and regulatory gaps emerge as major challenges

The study identifies a wide range of ethical, legal, and societal risks that demand immediate attention. Among the most pressing concerns are algorithmic bias, data privacy violations, misinformation, and the erosion of transparency and human judgment.

  • Algorithmic bias: AI systems often reflect the social and cultural contexts of their training data. To address these challenges, the study advocates for more resilient and adaptable governance models. Toward a balanced future of innovation and responsibility

While AI offers transformative potential across multiple domains, its successful integration depends on the ability to balance innovation with responsibility. This requires a multidisciplinary approach that brings together technological expertise, ethical considerations, and societal perspectives.

The research highlights that AI is not inherently beneficial or harmful; its impact depends on how it is designed, implemented, and governed.
