Strengthening Deepfake Regulations: A Call to Action

As the menace of deepfakes continues to escalate, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has called for more stringent regulations to shield children and society. The issue, now a significant concern, prompted the government to initiate discussions with industry leaders for enhanced safety measures beyond current frameworks.

Vaishnaw stressed the importance of collaboration with social media giants like Netflix, YouTube, and Meta. He highlighted the critical necessity for these companies to adhere to India's legal framework and constitutional mandates, advocating for a concerted effort to address age-based restrictions as a protective measure.

During the AI Summit, Vaishnaw underscored the urgency of parliamentary consensus on this growing threat. Reflecting on steps taken in the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) framework, he noted the global shift towards age-based regulatory distinctions, advocating for similar strategies to protect young audiences.
