AI's Double-Edged Sword: Balancing Innovation and Misinformation

Union Minister Jitin Prasada has cautioned against the misuse of AI tools, stressing that misinformation generated through artificial intelligence could undermine democratic systems. Speaking at the AI Impact Summit, Prasada highlighted the dual role of AI in potentially enhancing learning for students and teachers while warning against its potential risks.

He emphasized that AI should not be treated as a shortcut to weaken critical thinking or curiosity, asserting that it cannot replace teachers. Prasada also raised concerns about the vulnerability of citizens to cyber threats and misinformation, which could derail democracies, especially in a country like India with frequent elections.

Prasada urged the integration of AI into educational frameworks beyond basic curricula, advocating for capacity building and ensuring students understand computational thinking. Additionally, he noted the government's efforts to provide data for researchers and innovators, leveraging India's unique data resources to fuel AI advancements.
