Under the swaying palm trees of Yasha Park, the 6th Asian Beach Games commenced in Sanya, China's tropical resort city, marking a triumphant return of continental sports events after pandemic-induced delays. The opening ceremony, steeped in vibrant culture, saw 45 delegations march proudly as Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin declared the Games officially open.
Originally slated for 2020, the Games faced postponements chiefly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, around 10,000 participants, including 1,790 athletes, have gathered to compete in this grand spectacle. The event marks the first major international sporting competition since the Hainan Free Trade Port's inauguration last December.
This edition is noteworthy not only as Hainan's debut in hosting a continental-level beach sports event but also for being China's most significant participation in Asian Beach Games history. China is fielding a robust team of 255 members, including 171 athletes, across 13 sports and 60 events.
