Rohit Sharma, former India captain and opening batsman for Mumbai Indians, has begun his IPL 2026 campaign on a high note. His stellar performance has turned heads, including that of Sunil Gavaskar, who praised Sharma's enhanced footwork resulting from his improved physical condition. Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar highlighted the impact of Sharma's fitness on his batting.
Gavaskar said, “We've all seen the change in Rohit Sharma's physical condition. He has clearly worked very hard, and the rewards are visible. His footwork looks quicker, he has more energy, and that gives him more time at the crease. Elegant players often make batting look effortless, but that comes from preparation and hard work.”
The 38-year-old Sharma has retired from Test and T20I cricket and now exclusively plays ODIs internationally. His dedication to fitness was evident during MI's opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders, where he scored a breathtaking 78 off 38 balls. This performance marked Mumbai's largest chase in IPL history, breaking an eight-year curse of losing first matches since 2012. Gavaskar was particularly impressed by Sharma's shot selection, reminiscent of his prime.
As Mumbai Indians prepare to face Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, fans and analysts alike are hopeful for another standout performance from Sharma, embodying what many have now dubbed a 'Rohit Sharma Special.' (ANI)
