Malaysia's Asian Cup Dreams Dashed as AFC Strikes Down Wins
Malaysia's bid for the 2027 Asian Cup ended after the AFC annulled their wins over Nepal and Vietnam due to ineligible players. The Football Association of Malaysia received sanctions, while seven players faced bans for using falsified documents. Malaysia now lags six points behind Vietnam in Group F.
Malaysia's hopes for the 2027 Asian Cup title have been extinguished. On Tuesday, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) revoked Malaysia’s victories over Nepal and Vietnam, citing the use of ineligible players. The disciplinary ruling altered both results to 3-0 forfeits, leaving Malaysia trailing Group F leaders Vietnam by six points.
The Football Association of Malaysia is now tasked with a $50,000 fine payable within 30 days, with no immediate comment from the association. The penalties followed the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) decision to partially uphold the prior sanctions set by FIFA. These included a 12-month suspension for seven involved footballers, who were found guilty of using falsified naturalisation documents.
Among the banned players is Deportivo Alaves' Facundo Garces. FIFA's investigation revealed doctored documentation allowed these players' participation against Vietnam. The Football Association of Malaysia also faces a separate CHF 350,000 ($444,275) fine from FIFA. The suspended footballers are now restricted from all professional activities for one year.
