Oil Spill Crisis: Moldova Holds Russia Accountable
A Russian attack on a Ukrainian hydroelectric plant led to an oil spill affecting Moldova. This incident prompted water supply cuts in Moldova's Balti and other towns, alongside widespread environmental concerns. Moldovan President Maia Sandu criticized Russia and sought EU support to mitigate the pollution's impact.
Moldova is facing an environmental crisis after a Russian attack on a hydroelectric plant in southern Ukraine resulted in an oil spill that contaminated the Dniestr River, essential to Moldova's water system.
Officials announced water supply cuts in Balti, the country's second-largest city, along with three other towns, emphasizing the extent of contamination. President Maia Sandu condemned Russia, holding it responsible for the deterioration of Moldova's environmental integrity.
The European Union, which has heavily supported Moldova since Maia Sandu's election in 2020, expressed its readiness to assist in addressing the crisis. Meanwhile, Moldova's government declared an environmental alert and temporarily closed schools, enabling online learning as part of immediate response measures.
