Australia's cricket captain, Pat Cummins, is making strides in his recovery from a lower-back injury as he races against time to join the team for the second Ashes test against England.
Cummins, who was pulled out of the first match in Perth, aims to return for the showdown in Brisbane. The star paceman practiced bowling off a short run-up at Cricket New South Wales' training facilities, closely observed by team staff.
Despite his efforts, head coach Andrew McDonald has indicated that Cummins may not join any warm-up games precluding the Gabba test. In his absence, Steve Smith will take the captaincy reins in Perth, while Scott Boland is anticipated to replace Cummins in the lineup.
