A political dispute has emerged in Kochi as Congress MP Hibi Eden accuses the Kerala government of engaging in dubious activities related to the renovation of the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium. This comes on the heels of a canceled Argentina football match, which was expected to bolster tourism and enthusiasm in the region.
Eden voiced concerns over alleged violations, including unauthorized tree felling, and questioned the legitimacy of a private firm's involvement. He urged the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) to clarify the public’s concerns about the stadium's future. Meanwhile, the Kerala government maintains that all procedures were transparent and according to regulations.
The state sports minister's office refuted claims of misconduct, clarifying that no exclusive rights were conferred to private firms beyond November 30. It also confirmed future plans to elevate the stadium to FIFA standards. Despite the controversy, the GCDA and Sports Kerala Foundation aim to complete renovations before December, ensuring the venue remains operational for upcoming matches.
