World Chess Champion D Gukesh is eagerly anticipating his return to Goa, a place filled with cherished memories, as he leads the Indian team at the FIDE World Cup 2025. 'I am really excited about the World Cup,' he shared, noting Goa's significance in his early chess career.
Gukesh last competed in Goa in 2019, securing 10th place at the Goa International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament despite being initially unseeded. Now, as the reigning world champion, he aims to make another memorable visit to the renowned tourist destination.
After 23 years, the FIDE World Cup returns to India, hosted at a North Goa resort from October 31 to November 27, 2025. The tournament will feature 206 players from 82 countries, including Anish Giri from the Netherlands, vying for a $20,00,000 prize in a knock-out format, with the top finishers advancing to the 2026 Candidates event.
