Delhi to Deepen Yamuna's Waterway at ITO Barrage to Tackle Flooding

In a strategic initiative, Delhi is set to embark on a silt removal project in the Yamuna river, particularly targeting the ITO barrage, according to official announcements made on Wednesday. The move is expected to enhance the city's flood management efficiency.
Administrators noted that malfunctioning barrage gates, primarily due to excessive silting, contributed significantly to severe flooding three years ago in critical areas like ITO and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. The project aims to deepen the water channel from the river's left bank, ensuring unobstructed flow.
A July 2023 report by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department revealed unprecedented rainfall led to record water levels. In response, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta orchestrated a review meeting, emphasizing timely desilting of drains and heightened readiness at flood-prone spots.
