The Karnataka Forest Department has tightened its regulations on trekking, mandating that all trekkers be accompanied by certified nature guides carrying GPS-enabled walkie-talkies.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre announced the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) following recent safety incidents during treks. A notable case involved a missing woman from Kerala at Tadiandamol hill.
The SOP outlines that each group of trekkers will have a guide, regardless of group size, mandating online registration to ensure accountability. Environmental guidelines prohibit certain items and actions to protect both trekkers and the environment.
