A wolf that escaped from a Daejeon zoo in South Korea was recaptured on Friday after evading capture for nine days. The saga ended after the 2-year-old wolf, Neukgu, was sedated and returned safely to the zoo.
Neukgu was spotted near a highway 4 kilometers from the zoo. A search team recaptured him at 12:44 a.m. on Friday using a tranquilizer gun under the operation of a veterinarian. Back at the zoo, a fishing hook was removed from his stomach, although his health is stable.
The incident had pushed authorities to close the zoo and an affiliated theme park temporarily. Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo praised the search team and vowed to enhance animal welfare and public safety protocols. The escape also led to a viral meme coin named 'Neukgu'.
