Cracking Down on Concrete: NGT Fights for Trees in Dehradun

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has concluded a case regarding the concretisation of tree trunks in Dehradun, advising the applicant to submit a new representation supported by photographs to the divisional forest officer and relevant urban body.

A bench led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava heard the plea against using non-pervious materials around trees, violating protection norms. Previously submitted photographic evidence backed the claims, but prior grievances were withdrawn in May 2025 due to procedural direction to approach respective authorities.

Referencing past judgments mandating a one-metre clearance of concrete from tree trunks, the tribunal has authorized the applicant to make new submissions to the concerned authorities. Authorities must document their follow-up actions, with potential repercussions for non-compliance.
