The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sparked controversy by approving the Great Nicobar project, despite vocal opposition from environmentalists who foresee disastrous ecological implications.
The tribunal's eastern zonal bench in Kolkata, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, sanctioned the project citing strategic importance and adequate safeguards outlined in the environmental clearance conditions. Critics, including Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, former bureaucrats, and environmentalists, expressed outrage, dubbing the decision disappointing and unfortunate.
With pending litigation in the Calcutta High Court, the opposition remains hopeful for intervention. Seventy scholars and activists have appealed to the Environment Minister to reconsider the project, emphasizing its grave long-term ecological risks.
