In a significant move, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has mandated the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to draft a strategy to rejuvenate the water bodies across Delhi. This directive comes after a hearing on the unlawful extraction of groundwater in the Brahampuri area of east Delhi.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that the unauthorized borewell had already been sealed, with an environmental compensation of Rs 35,064 imposed on the violator. The bench, comprising judicial member Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel, emphasized that the compensation collected should now be used effectively to implement the rejuvenation plan.
The tribunal has given the Delhi Pollution Control Committee six months to consult with the district wetland committee and the state wetland authority for crafting a comprehensive action plan. A compliance report is expected to follow this timeline to ensure accountability and progress in restoring Delhi's precious water resources.
