A devastating fire has ravaged the historic Teatro Sannazaro, located in a prestigious neighborhood in Naples, Italy, officials reported Tuesday. Originating from an apartment block in Chiaia, the blaze rapidly consumed much of the 19th-century theater, causing the domed roof to collapse and decimating the lavish stalls and boxes.
Naples fire commander Giuseppe Paduano stated that little remains of the theater as firefighters work to douse lingering hotspots. While the exact cause is under investigation, Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi indicated initial evidence points to accidental ignition. Four individuals required hospitalization for smoke inhalation, but no fatalities have been reported.
Mayor Manfredi expressed profound sorrow, describing the destruction as a significant cultural loss for the city. The theater, inaugurated in 1847, is known for hosting renowned Italian performers. The local and central governments have pledged to support reconstruction efforts, similar to past restorations of cultural sites like Venice's Fenice opera house.
