The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has set a firm deadline for the Hamirpur Municipal Corporation in Himachal Pradesh to address a pressing waste management issue. The tribunal has directed the corporation to clear all 10,000 metric tonnes of legacy waste from the Dughneri site by February 10, 2026.

This order comes in response to a plea filed in the Rita Sharma and Others versus the State of Himachal Pradesh case. The NGT bench, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member A Senthil Vel, acknowledged a formal undertaking from the municipal commissioner, Abhishek Garg, assuring that the waste clearance will be completed as instructed.

Despite previous directives, the waste remediation process had seen minimal progress. The Hamirpur Municipal Corporation has laid out an execution plan, leveraging various waste processing techniques and proposing infrastructure upgrades to ensure no future pile-up of legacy waste.
